3rd March 2010: Algarve Golf Property News
Both amateurs and professionals will be able to play in a new European golf tour during the winter months thanks to the newly formed Iberian Golf Tour (IG Tour).
The IG Tour has taken advantage of the great winter climate down here to arrange tournaments for competitive players who who cannot play in northern Europe because of the inclement weather.
The first tour will be in the western Costa de la Luz and eastern Algarve starting on February 18 2010 with rounds being played at Quinta do Vale, Castro Marim, El Rompido and both Costa Esuri courses.
The IG Tour officially started in December 2009 on a pay and play basis and is a third tier tournament to the European tour. Ladies, gentlemen and seniors are all eligible to play, according to handicap in the the open competitions.
The pay and play format means that prize money is rewarded on a sliding scale according to the number of entrants. For example if there are 50 professionals in the field then the prize fund could total 12,500 euros or if there are 90 then this could increase to more than 20,000 euros. The minimum prize fund will always be 5,000 euros and around half the entrants will be entitled to a share of this. Hopefully this new tour will bring professional level golf to the new courses in the region.
“We want to bring our golf tour to courses that would not usually see pro-am competitions and introduce this format to those who would not usually consider taking part in such a tournament,” said David Silva of IG Tour.
